Travelling to Malaysia: entry requirements checklist 2026
A comprehensive 2026 checklist of entry requirements for travelling to Malaysia, including the MDAC, visas, passport validity and customs.
Travelling to Malaysia in 2026 is largely straightforward, but a number of small requirements must be in order before departure. This article brings them together into a single checklist so that travellers can verify each point well before flying or crossing the border.
Passport requirements
The passport is the foundation of every other entry requirement. Before booking and again before departure, confirm that:
- The passport is valid for at least six months beyond the planned date of arrival
- There are at least two blank pages available for stamps
- The passport is in good physical condition with no significant damage to the photo page or chip
- The data on the passport matches the name used for flight bookings and the MDAC
Travellers whose passports are close to expiry should renew before travelling. Some airlines refuse boarding to passengers who do not meet the six-month rule, even if the destination would technically admit them.
Visa requirements
Visa requirements depend entirely on nationality. Many nationalities can enter Malaysia for short tourist stays without a visa; others must apply for an eVISA or a sticker visa in advance. The standard checks before travel are:
- Confirm the visa rule for your specific nationality on the official Malaysian Immigration Department website
- If a visa is required, apply with sufficient lead time to receive it before departure
- Verify that the purpose of travel matches the visa category obtained
- Note the permitted length of stay and plan accordingly
MDAC submission
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is required for almost all foreign visitors. Key points to include in the pre-travel checklist:
- Submit within three days of the planned arrival date
- Use the official Malaysian Immigration Department website, free of charge
- Ensure all data matches the passport exactly
- Save the confirmation email and a screenshot
- Resubmit if any travel detail changes after the original submission
Onward and return travel
Although the MDAC does not require proof of onward travel, immigration officers can request it on arrival. Carry evidence of:
- A confirmed return or onward flight from Malaysia
- A clear travel plan if the next destination requires its own visa
- Sufficient funds to support the stay, if specifically asked
Open-ended itineraries without any onward booking are sometimes treated with additional questions, particularly for long stays.
Accommodation
An address for the first night of the stay is part of the MDAC and may be requested again at the immigration counter. Best practice is to:
- Have a confirmed booking for at least the first night
- Save the booking confirmation on a phone, in addition to email
- Be ready to provide the address and contact telephone number of the accommodation
Health and travel insurance
Malaysia does not generally require specific vaccinations for tourist entry, although yellow fever vaccination may be required for travellers arriving from countries with risk of transmission. Travel insurance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. A good policy should cover:
- Emergency medical treatment and hospital stays
- Medical evacuation if necessary
- Trip cancellation and delay
- Loss of baggage and personal items
Customs and currency
Malaysian customs allows a reasonable duty-free allowance for personal items, alcohol and tobacco. Travellers should be aware of the rules on:
- Cigarettes, alcohol and other duty-free goods within stated limits
- Restrictions on certain food products, plants and animal items
- Cash declaration thresholds for amounts above the official limit
- Strict prohibitions on illegal drugs, with severe penalties
Travellers carrying medication, particularly controlled substances or injectables, should bring a doctor's note or prescription in English to support customs clearance.
Useful items for arrival day
Some practical items make arrival considerably easier:
- A power bank for the mobile phone, since immigration and arrival can take longer than expected
- A pen, in case any paper form is still required at a specific border
- Local currency or a working bank card for transport from the airport
- Printed copies of the MDAC confirmation, accommodation booking and onward ticket as a backup
Final pre-departure review
The day before travel, take a few minutes to confirm the entire checklist:
- Passport in hand and valid for six months beyond arrival
- Any required visa issued and printed
- MDAC submitted within the three-day window, confirmation saved
- Onward or return ticket booked and accessible
- First night's accommodation confirmed
- Travel insurance in place
- Mobile phone charged and key documents downloaded offline
Travellers who tick off this checklist before leaving home tend to have a smooth, predictable arrival in Malaysia. The MDAC is one important item among several; treating it with the same care as a flight booking or visa application is the best way to avoid surprises at the border.
